I was going through all of the noteworthy people who died in 2008 when my son came in and sat on my lap. We came across a picture of Bo Diddley. I pointed out an observation that his guitar in the picture was rectangle.
He replied yes.
He further explained to me that Mr. Diddley made the guitar himself.
He also added that not only did he make it himself but out of the ever resourceful and acoustically guitar worthy ... cereal box.
After we finished going through all the photos, my son said all of the people who died are grey (black and white). He told me that he knows when we die we are still color but maybe that's when our pictures turn grey.
For weeks my son has been so excited because he was about to lose two of his front teeth. His first loose teeth and before Christmas. Just like the song. Well, maybe. He decided that he wanted to just let them fall out by themselves. Try as his mother and I might, he would cower and run away at the hint of us pulling them out. Pliers, string, anything ... Run away. Well he didn't lose them for Christmas. But he did lose one. However, he doesn't know where."It was here this morning," he said."Where?" I reply."In my mouth."I saw it too and he never moved from the couch except to tell us it was gone. So there I am, on hands and knees examining each carpet fiber in the hope it fell out somewhere downstairs. Living room, family room, dining room, pantry, kitchen ... no where to be found. We told him he was gonna swallow it. He kept saying, "no way it's as big as a Lego, I'd feel it." Truth be told his tooth was probably about half the size of a tic tac. This will definitely be something to remember. I have learned a valuable lesson ... next time I'll pull them out while he sleeps.
This morning while ironing my clothes and watching ESPN Sports Center a commercial about tire cleaner came on. Black Magic Titanium Tire Cleaner. A Barry White-like voice began to describe the product while a kaleidoscope background of tires and cars rotated around enough to feel like Timothy Leary was the director. Anyway, then scantily clad ladies start popping up dancing. I understand the fascination with cars and women but seriously, this has got to be the most ridiculous commercial I have seen in a while since Hootie pimped burgers for Burger King.
My son happened to be present for this unexpected surprise on the idiot box when I said that this was the most ridiculous commercial.
He replied, "Yep. But those girls really LOVE tires."

I have an annoying habit that drives my wife crazy. But I really didn't know how annoying it was until I experienced something similar from her point of view. Ever graze your hand across your face and find a hair that you've never noticed before and then it starts an obsession to remove it. I was sitting down to lunch with a client and at the end of our meal we were discussing things of the world and family when all of a sudden, out of the corner of my eye, I saw that he VIOLENTLY jerked his hand away from his face. I ignored it but was curious at what happened and didn't mention anything. However, the next time I was waiting for it. Apparently, he took this opportunity to share his grooming habits by viciously ripping his uneven eyebrow hairs from their perch. OH MY! I let it go for a little while but couldn't stand the now obsessive behavior to remove his hair while at the lunch table and I excused myself. To my wife...I am so sorry that you have had to endure this similar behavior from me in the past. I will try better to keep my eyebrows, ears, nose and neck (or whatever other facial hairs that appear to be unkempt) better groomed. At times, I am sure parts of my face look like a recently exploded New Years party favor or resemble a freshly blown noise maker and they need better tending to. In your presence (and in the car) is probably not the best opportunity to address my personal hygiene and I am sorry.
Steve Sang Hoon Kwon.Yesterday our friend was laid to rest. It was a beautiful day and ceremony. Quite fitting for a man that saw the beauty in all of us.God be with us...'til we meet again. We love you.
The Charlatans announced last year they will be offering their next studio record for free. At last look, this is planned for 3 Mar 08. If you like their kind of music (or even if you don't), this is a chance to check out this talented band. The latest single, You Cross My Path, is available right now.Radiohead released their record, In Rainbows, last Oct in a similar way. It has got to be their best offering since OK Computer. (Let me know if you are interested.) I can't wait to see them when they come to the Hollywood Bowl next.Xfm.com (UK) provides an occasional freebie in their "Watch and Listen" section. On another note but staying with the "free" theme, I have found myself longing for Friday mornings. Not for the obvious reasons but actually to go to work and stop by Chick-fil-A on the way. Since the beginning of the year, Chick-fil-A has been offering breakfast for free. Every Friday morning (through the end of Feb) they serve up one of their tasty breakfast items for free with no purchase necessary. This may only be in the Irvine location next to the 133 but it's worth a try.
Music is important to me. I listen to anything and almost everything. I really enjoy game night at our friend's house because we eventually listen to Hair Nation (high school days, 80s metal and hair bands). For the past few years, I have been listening religiously to a small radio station on the left-hand side of the FM dial, KCRW (89.9 in SoCal). To me, KCRW, is a beautiful blend of college radio and talk radio for your parents. One of the best things about this station is that it is streamed as well and I get to listen at work. I would love to buy most of the music I hear on their Morning Becomes Eclectic program but unfortunately will not allow myself to afford it. Sometime last year they decided to make available one song a day free for download known as Top Tune. Try the station out and you might find something new you'll like. One of my wife's friends put together a list of their favorite music of 2007 and made it available for download. I hope that this will inspire me to do the same for '08.
I think it has rained here in SoCal more in this year than it has in the past two years. It's beautiful to see the fire ravaged areas bursting with green. Our lawn is looking sweet. Apparently, the worms don't seem to like the rain as much as I do as they have been crawling into the house under our slider and as far a a couple of feet indoors. Does this seem right to anyone else? Are they looking for a warm place to sleep? Is this a sign of the second coming? Either way, I choose eradication. An old practice my dad taught me with slugs was to use salt. It works great with worms too. As soon as I rain Morton's on them, they flop around like a fish out of water. I think have a future science project in mind for my son.
As much as I embrace technology, I loathe it at the same time. Over the holidays my son asked, "When I get a cell phone?" I laughed out loud. You know, one of those deep guttural laughs that is almost uncontrollably sarcastic. Come on ... what's a 5 year old gonna do with a phone? "To call my friends," he just stated as a matter of fact.Well, there you have it.
You up for a game of Dora memory. My son, 5, will rule you!
Though terrified about falling, my son, 5, rode his bike for the first time on Saturday without training wheels. Man...who knew how tiring that was going to be running up and down the street along side of him for 10 minutes.
